Good morning, まさきん here.

A test-drive article titled something like “Google AI Pro is a great deal if you push it to the limit” was trending on Hatena Bookmark. I have used several AI subscriptions myself, and I am starting to want to consolidate them into one. So this time, I sorted out Google AI Pro’s pricing and contents using official information only.

*This information is current as of publication. Please check the official websites for the latest terms.

POINT
  • In Japan, Google AI Pro is listed on the official page at 2,900 yen a month
  • It comes with 5TB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos
  • The Gemini app usage limit is 4x the free tier, and you get 1,000 Flow credits a month
  • Family sharing covers up to 5 people, who share the storage and some AI features
  • If it lets you cancel a separate cloud storage plan, your real cost may go down

About the trending test-drive article

What got me started was an article on note that pushes Google AI Pro to its limits. It tests how far you can go with the plan, and I had bookmarked it too.

That said, I am not borrowing any of its numbers here. Whether it is “cheap if you use it enough” depends on the person. So I will just lay out the official numbers you need to decide for yourself.

What kind of plan is Google AI Pro?

Google AI Pro is an AI-focused plan within Google One. It bundles generous access to Gemini’s top models with cloud storage.

The current Google AI plans come in three tiers: Plus, Pro, and Ultra. What used to be called “AI Premium” is now Google AI Plus. Pro sits in the middle.

Only personal Google accounts can sign up. You cannot subscribe with a work Workspace account.

Pricing in Japan

Here are the monthly prices shown on Gemini’s official site for Japan.

PlanMonthly price (official)StorageGemini usage limit
Free0 yen15GBStandard
Google AI Plus725 yen400GB2x the free tier
Google AI Pro2,900 yen5TB4x the free tier
Google AI Ultra (5x)14,500 yen20TB5x Pro
Google AI Ultra (20x)32,000 yen30TB20x Pro

Pro costs 2,900 yen a month. Ultra starts at 14,500 yen, so the gap is huge.

On the other hand, I could not confirm annual plan pricing this time. I also could not confirm the length of the free trial in Japan. Please check the latest terms on the sign-up screen.

You can cancel anytime. However, the official info says the remainder of the billing period is not refunded.

There are also storage-only Google One plans without AI. I could not read their Japanese prices off the official page, so I have left them out here.

What is included

The Gemini app

The core of it is the Gemini app. With Pro, you can use top models such as Gemini 3.1 Pro more than on the free tier.

The usage limit is based on compute, not “number of uses.” How much you consume depends on the complexity of your prompts, the features you use, and the length of the chat. The limit resets every 5 hours, and there is also a weekly cap.

Even after you hit the limit, you can keep chatting with the lighter Flash-Lite model.

Another difference is how much it can take in at once. The table in the official help center showed the following.

If you want to feed it long PDFs all at once, this may make a real difference. Note, though, that video generation and Deep Research are said to consume a lot of your usage.

Gemini in Gmail and Docs

With Pro, you can use Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Vids, and more. You can ask it to proofread emails or draft documents right from the apps you already use.

However, not every feature is available in Japan. For example, Gmail’s “AI Inbox” was listed on the official page as US only. Supported languages are limited too, so check whether the feature you want works in your language.

Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)

The tool that reads your materials and produces summaries and audio overviews is listed on the official page as “Gemini Notebook.” The help center still calls it NotebookLM.

Compared with Plus, Pro raises the limits on the following features.

Each notebook can hold up to 300 sources. If you like organizing research by source material, this looks quite useful.

Flow and other creative tools

Google Flow, for making videos and images, is also included in Pro. Pro comes with 1,000 credits a month. Plus gets 200 a month, so that is a 5x difference.

There is also Google Flow Music for making music. The official help center says Pro members get 10,000 credits every month.

One thing to watch is additional AI credits. There is a way to buy more once you have used up your limit. But the official help center says this is “not available in Japan.” In Japan, if you want to go beyond the limit, upgrading to Ultra is the only option.

I could not find the image generator Whisk listed as a Pro benefit on the official pages this time. So I am leaving it out here.

Jules and other developer perks

Jules is in beta, though. For now it is English only. If you do not do development, it may be more level-headed not to count this toward the price.

YouTube and other bonus perks

The official page says Pro includes YouTube Premium Lite. It is an individual plan with fewer ads on most videos.

However, availability varies by country. I could not tell for sure from the official pages whether it is included in Japan. It also says the perk does not activate during a free trial. And if you already subscribe to YouTube Premium, the Lite perk will not be activated.

It also comes with the Standard plan of Google Home Premium. Japan was on the list of eligible countries for that one.

What family sharing gets you

Pro can be shared with up to 5 people through Family Sharing. Here is what can and cannot be shared.

ItemShared with family
Storage (5TB)Yes
AI features such as the Gemini app and Gemini NotebookYes
Usage limits for Flow and AntigravityYes (shared across the whole group)
YouTube Premium LiteNo (manager only)
Google Home PremiumNo (manager only)
Google Developer Program perksNo

Other members cannot see your files.

On the other hand, limits like Flow’s are split across the whole family. If everyone in the family uses video generation, the allowance may run out quickly.

Student offers

Gemini’s student page for Japan advertised a student plan for Google AI Plus. Eligible university students aged 18 or older get it free for one year. You must sign up by December 31, 2026, after which you are automatically billed 725 yen a month.

The Google One page also mentioned a student discount plan for Pro. However, I could not confirm whether the Pro student discount is available in Japan. If you have a university student in the family, checking the student page directly is the surest way.

How to think about it if you already pay for 2TB separately

This may be the most important part. I think many households pay separately for cloud storage for photos and files. In that case, if you can move everything to Pro and cancel that plan, your real cost changes.

The math is simple.

What to compareHow to calculate it
What you pay nowStorage fees + AI subscription fees
After moving to Pro2,900 yen
Real difference2,900 yen minus the total of plans you can cancel
If you share with familyEach family member’s storage fees also become cancellable

Say you are paying a monthly fee for 2TB of storage. If you can cancel that, you can subtract it from the 2,900 yen. If you can also consolidate your AI subscriptions, the gap shrinks even further.

The key is not to count things you cannot actually cancel. If you need to keep another service for work, you cannot subtract it. I have covered how to spot overlaps in practical ways to find and eliminate duplicate subscriptions.

Is it a bargain if you use it to the max?

To cut to the conclusion, I think it comes down to “what can it replace.”

If you use AI every day, the 4x limit and 1 million tokens are attractive. On top of that you get 5TB of storage. The more you were paying separately for storage and AI, the more of a bargain it will likely feel.

On the other hand, you do not need to use every perk. If you never use Jules or Flow, they are worth zero to you. Trying to get your money’s worth out of perks you do not need may just eat up your time instead.

I have also written about narrowing subscriptions down to one in my post on canceling Netflix and keeping just one video subscription. AI subscriptions are the same, and I feel it is natural to settle on the one you actually have a reason to use.

Who it suits and who it does not

Suits you ifDoes not suit you if
You can cancel a separate cloud storage planThe free 15GB of storage is enough for you
You use Gemini daily for research and writingYou only ask AI the occasional question
You want to share storage with your familyYou want to use it with a work Workspace account
You use Gmail and Docs regularlyYou need to keep using another company’s AI for work
You want to feed it long documents all at onceYou want to go beyond the limits (no extra credits in Japan)

If you are unsure, starting with Plus at 725 yen is one option.

While you are reviewing subscriptions, it is worth looking at your phone bill too. It goes out every month without fail, so your fixed costs as a whole may get lighter.

How to sign up

Based on the official guidance, the steps are as follows.

  1. Sign in with a personal Google account
  2. Open the Gemini subscriptions page or the Google One page
  3. Choose Google AI Pro and check the price and trial terms
  4. Register a payment method and sign up
  5. If you want to share with family, turn on Family Sharing in Google One

Google One members who subscribed through another company or through Pixel Pass cannot sign up for Pro. The official help center says so. If you already have a subscription, it is reassuring to check how you signed up first.

What to check before you start

Warning

In Japan, you cannot buy extra AI credits after using up your limit. If you want to go beyond the limit, the official guidance is to upgrade to Ultra.

I have written about when to cancel a sync service in canceling Obsidian Sync and saving about 10,000 yen a year. I think the order of moving your data first and then canceling applies to storage as well.

Wrapping up

Google AI Pro turned out to be a plan that bundles Gemini’s higher-tier access with 5TB of storage for 2,900 yen a month. Whether it is a good deal comes down almost entirely to what it lets you cancel, I think.

Rather than being swayed by the number of perks, it seems best to line it up against what you are paying now. Start by taking one look at your current bills.
