Good morning, this is まさきん.
Last time, I went over Google AI Pro’s pricing and features. What caught my attention afterward was how to share it with family. We are a dual-income household with four kids. If one subscription can cover the whole family, that might change how I think about it. So this time, I have put together the setup steps and scope of family sharing, following the official help pages.
*This reflects information at the time of publication. Please check the official sites for the latest terms.
- Gemini (Google AI Pro) family sharing covers the manager plus up to 5 family members
- Setup takes two steps: create a family group, then turn on sharing in Google One settings
- Family members can use storage and AI features such as the Gemini app at no extra cost
- YouTube Premium Lite and Google Developer Program benefits are for the manager only
- Google One benefits do not appear on child accounts managed by a parent
What This Post Covers
I covered the overall pricing and features in my post on Google AI Pro pricing and features. This post digs into just one part of that: family sharing.
So I will leave detailed pricing comparisons and plan differences to that post. Here I focus on the order of setup and what family members can actually use.
Note that I have not set up sharing myself yet. This is based on reading the official help pages and working out how it would apply to our family.
Pricing and Plan Basics
Google AI Pro is an AI-focused plan within Google One. I covered how to read the pricing in my previous post. Prices can change, so checking the latest amount on the sign-up screen is the surest approach.
The official help says you can subscribe either monthly or annually. For storage, you choose between 5TB and 10TB.
Family sharing does not require a separate fee. The help says family members can use some AI benefits at no extra cost. In other words, you can extend one subscription to your family at the same price.
Who You Can Share With
First, who you can share with. Here are the conditions I could confirm in the official help.
| Item | Condition in the official help |
|---|---|
| Number of people | Up to 5 family members besides the manager (up to 6 in the group) |
| Manager age | 18 or older to set up a family group (or the age of majority in your country) |
| Manager account | A personal Google Account (not work or school) |
| Country of residence | Invitees must live in the same country as the manager |
| Member accounts | A Google Account is required. Work or school accounts are not allowed |
| Group membership | Only one group at a time. Not allowed if you were in another group in the past 12 months |
| Sharing controls | Only the plan manager can start or stop sharing |
The 12-month restriction is the one to watch. Someone who was in another family group may not be able to switch right away.
For example, say someone in your family is in a different group through a YouTube family plan. Even after leaving that group, they may have to wait before joining the new one.
Setup Happens in Two Steps
Setup consists of two steps: create a family group, then turn on sharing in Google One. Thinking of them separately makes it less confusing.
A family group is Google’s shared framework for families. It is not specific to Google One.
If your family already has a group, you may only need the second step.
Setup Steps on a Computer
The official help gives these steps for a computer.
- On a computer, sign in to your personal Google Account
- Open families.google.com (g.co/YourFamily)
- Choose Get started (使ってみる), then Create family group (ファミリー グループを作成)
- Follow the on-screen instructions to invite family members
- Invited members accept the invitation sent by email or other means
- Open one.google.com and select Settings (設定)
- Turn on Share Google One with family (Google One をファミリーと共有)
Invitations are sent to an email address or phone number. Members cannot use family services until they accept.
If you want to resend an invitation, the help says to remove the member once and add them again.
The sharing steps in the Google One help were for computers. Personally, I would do it all at once on a computer.
Benefits You Can Share
This may be what you most want to know. Here is what the Google One help says the whole family can use.
| Benefit | Shared with family | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Storage (Gmail, Drive, Photos) | Yes | Shared storage is used after your personal 15GB |
| Gemini app | Yes | Available to everyone as an AI feature |
| Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) | Yes | Available to everyone as an AI feature |
| Google Antigravity | Yes | Limits are shared across the whole group |
| Google Flow | Yes | Limits are shared across the whole group |
| AI credits | Yes | Additional purchases are not available in Japan |
| Workspace premium features | Yes | Requires Google AI Plus (2TB) or higher |
| Google Health Premium | Yes | Conditions apply, such as being 18 or older |
Workspace premium features are features you can use in Gmail, Docs, and so on. In the help, they are listed as a benefit everyone can use on Google AI Plus (2TB) or higher. Pro is a higher plan that meets this condition.
However, I could not find details in the help on how individual features like Gemini in Gmail or Docs appear for family members. If there is a feature you want to use, it is best to check the screen on a family member’s account.
Benefits You Cannot Share
On the other hand, some benefits are for the manager only.
| Benefit | How the official help treats it |
|---|---|
| YouTube Premium Lite | Manager only. Cannot be shared with family |
| Google Developer Program premium | Manager only |
| Google Colab | Manager only |
| Google Store points | Manager only. Family members do not receive them |
| Some Google Home Premium benefits | Manager only. Some benefits are not available to Pro family members |
| Buying AI credits and changing plans | Only the manager can do this |
Family members expecting fewer ads from YouTube Premium Lite may be confused. That benefit simply does not apply to their accounts.
Also, some Google One benefits are “one per plan.” If someone in your family uses it first, other members cannot. Used benefits reportedly show a date in the benefit history.
Features Where the Group Shares a Limit
Another important point is how limits work. For Google Flow and Google Antigravity, limits are not per member. They are shared across the whole family group.
For example, if one family member makes a lot of videos in Flow, everyone else has less to work with.
Generative AI features in Google Photos are different, though. Each family member gets their own daily limit. So whether a limit is shared or per person depends on the feature.
How Storage Is Used and Privacy
Think of storage as one big box the family shares. But that does not mean anyone can see what is inside.
Each member first has up to 15GB of personal storage. Once that is used up, shared storage kicks in.
On privacy, the official help says the following.
- You cannot see other members’ files unless they share them with you directly
- Members can see each other’s name, photo, and email address
- You can see how much shared storage each member is using
- You can only delete your own files
In other words, you can tell who is using how many GB. But you cannot see the contents of their photos or files.
If space runs low, you would ask the heaviest users to clean up. For families with lots of photos, this may need a family conversation.
Sorting out family subscriptions, I realized phone bills also reveal a lot when you look at them as a family. They may be one of the biggest items among monthly fixed costs.

How Child Accounts Are Handled
As a father of four, this was something I wanted to check carefully.
The Google One help says benefits do not appear on accounts managed by a parent, meaning child accounts managed with Family Link. So it seems kids cannot use Pro benefits that way.
There are age requirements too. Here is what I could confirm in the official help.
| Feature | Age requirement |
|---|---|
| Gemini app | 13 or older (or the applicable age in your country) |
| Gemini Notebook | 13 or older (or the applicable age in your country) |
| YouTube Premium Lite | 13 or older (or the applicable age in your country) |
| Google Flow | 18 or older |
| Deep Research | 18 or older |
| Google Antigravity and Jules | 18 or older |
| Generative AI features in Google Photos | 18 or older (or the applicable age in your country) |
That said, there is a way for children under 13 to use the Gemini app. In Google Family Link, parents can turn it on or off by going to Settings, then Gemini, then Gemini app.
When a child starts using it for the first time, a notification is sent to the parent’s email. But it is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available even if you turn it on.
This is separate from Pro benefits. Being able to use Gemini and being able to use Pro’s allowance are best thought of as two different things.
When the Manager Cancels or Stops Sharing
What happens to family members when the manager stops sharing? Here is what the official help says.
| What happens | Details |
|---|---|
| Storage and benefits | Family members lose access to Google One storage and benefits |
| Existing files | Remain and are not deleted |
| New files | Cannot be saved if storage is full |
| Expert support | No longer available to family members |
The same may happen when the manager leaves the group, and likewise when a member is removed.
The help also explains what happens if you cancel AI Pro itself. You lose Pro features in the Gemini app and the extra storage. Gemini in Gmail and Docs is affected as well.
The scary part is going over quota. If a family member’s photos exceed 15GB, they can no longer save new photos. Checking each family member’s usage before canceling should give you peace of mind.
To stop sharing, go to Settings (設定) at one.google.com and open Manage family settings (ファミリーの設定を管理). Then turn off Share Google One with family (Google One をファミリーと共有).
How I Would Use It as a Father of Four
From here on, this is about what I would do. It is a plan, not a report of results.
For our family, I think starting with just the two adults is realistic. My wife and I could each use the Gemini app and consolidate photo storage. Because of the age requirements, many families will find their kids are not eligible right away.
On the other hand, some features like Flow share a limit across the group. If the whole family starts making videos, the allowance may run out fast. It is probably best to decide who uses it.
As family accounts multiply, it gets harder to tell which is whose. I put my tips in using email aliases to manage family accounts. Note, though, that sharing requires each family member to have their own Google Account. Think of aliases as a management aid.
Common Mistakes and Pitfalls
Thinking sharing is on just because you created the group. Creating a family group does not start sharing until you turn it on in Google One settings. The second step is easy to forget.
Family members have not accepted the invite. Sending the invite is not enough. Members cannot use benefits until they accept.
Assuming YouTube Premium Lite is shared too. It is a manager-only benefit. Family accounts do not get fewer ads.
Burning through the Flow allowance as a family. The limit is shared across the group. If one person uses a lot, everyone else gets less.
Assuming kids get Pro too. Google One benefits do not appear on accounts managed by a parent.
Storage overflowing after you stop sharing. After canceling or stopping, anyone over 15GB can no longer save new files.
What to Check Before You Start
- Is the manager using a personal Google Account and 18 or older?
- Are you sharing with 5 family members or fewer?
- Do family members live in the same country as the manager?
- Does each family member have a personal Google Account?
- Has any family member been in another family group in the past 12 months?
- Do family members meet the age requirements for the features they want?
- Who will use features like Flow that share a limit across the group?
- Will family usage stay under 15GB if you cancel?
- Google One benefits do not appear on child accounts managed by a parent
- Buying additional AI credits is not available in Japan. The official guidance for going beyond the limit is to switch to Ultra
- Prices and plans may change. Check the latest terms on the sign-up screen
If you are consolidating subscriptions as a family, it is a good time to find duplicate ones too. I explained how in specific ways to spot and fix duplicate subscriptions.
FAQ
Q. How many people can share Gemini (Google AI Pro)?
You can share with up to 5 family members besides the manager, for a maximum of 6 in the family group. Members must live in the same country.
Q. Is there an extra charge for family sharing?
The official help says family members can use some AI benefits at no extra cost. You pay for just the manager’s single subscription. Check the monthly price on the official page for Japan.
Q. Can family members use the Gemini app’s advanced features too?
Yes. The Gemini app and Gemini Notebook are among the benefits everyone can use. However, features like Flow share a limit across the group.
Q. Can family members see my files and photos?
No. Other members cannot see anything you have not shared with them directly. They can, however, see how much storage each member uses.
Q. Can family members use YouTube Premium Lite?
No. The YouTube Premium Lite benefit belongs to the plan manager only. Family accounts do not get fewer ads.
Q. Can child accounts use Pro benefits?
Google One benefits reportedly do not appear on accounts managed by a parent. The Gemini app for children under 13 is set up separately in Family Link. It is best to treat that as separate from Pro benefits.
Q. If the manager cancels, are family members’ files deleted?
Existing files remain. But if storage is full, new files cannot be saved. Checking family usage before canceling gives peace of mind.

Summary
Google AI Pro family sharing takes two steps: create a group, then turn on sharing in Google One. Family members can use storage and the Gemini app. YouTube Premium Lite and a few others, however, are manager only. Flow’s limit is shared across the family.
For our family, I would start by having just the two adults use it. Kids have age requirements too, so it is best to decide based on who is in your family.
Once you see how a family can share subscriptions, you start wanting to line up other fixed costs by household too. Phone bills may be one of them.
