Good morning. This is まさきん.
Back in August, I used this article to sort out the “double interest” campaign for Rakuten Point Interest. Since then, more and more readers have been arriving here after searching for “Rakuten Point Fixed Term” instead. So I decided to rewrite the article, starting from how the fixed-term service and the interest service differ.
Note: this reflects information at the time of publication, based on what I confirmed on the official pages on October 2, 2026. Please check the official site for the latest conditions.
- Rakuten Point Fixed Term is a service where you deposit regular points for 2 years and receive interest at maturity
- You can withdraw the full amount before maturity, but in that case no interest is paid
- Rakuten Point Interest is a separate service, paying interest at 0.108% a year on the 5th of every month
- The September campaign for the fixed-term service offered 2.0% annual interest if you entered and added points
- The interest campaign that doubled interest only on points added in August ended on August 31, 2026
What is Rakuten Point Fixed Term?
Rakuten Point Fixed Term is one of the “grow your points” services inside Rakuten PointClub, the membership hub for Rakuten Points. You deposit points you have no plans to use, and when the term matures you receive interest. The official page introduced it as a way to manage points steadily, with the feel of putting money into savings.
The deposit period is 2 years. It works a lot like a time deposit at a bank. That said, the official page carries a note: it is a simulated bank-deposit experience using points, and it is not a financial product.
The page also says the points you deposit never decrease, and that they do not expire. To me, that makes it quite different in character from services whose value goes up and down.
How it differs from Rakuten Point Interest
The names are similar, so I think this is an easy place to get mixed up. They may even look like two menus of the same service.
Reading the official pages, though, they are two separate services. I put the differences into a table.
| Item | Rakuten Point Fixed Term | Rakuten Point Interest |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit period | 2 years | No set period |
| When interest arrives | The 1st of the month after maturity | The 5th of every month |
| Annual rate | 2.0% in September through a campaign | 0.108% |
| Early withdrawal | Possible (no interest is paid) | Possible at any time |
| Eligible points | Regular points only | Regular points only |
| Minimum unit | 1 point | 1 point |
| Automatic top-up | Not mentioned | Added automatically in Tame-Toku mode |
| Fees | None | None |
Roughly speaking, the interest service is close to an ordinary savings account, while the fixed-term service is, as the name says, close to a time deposit. Points you might use soon go to the interest side. Points you will not touch for 2 years go to the fixed-term side. Splitting them that way may be the easiest way to think about it.
Basic conditions of Rakuten Point Fixed Term
From here, I will lay out the conditions of the fixed-term service, as far as I could confirm them on the official page and in the help pages.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Deposit period | 2 years |
| Eligible points | Regular points only |
| Minimum addition | 1 point |
| Condition for earning interest | Add 100 points or more within the same month |
| Limit per addition | 30,000 points (500,000 points for Diamond members) |
| Daily limit on transactions | 10 in total, counting additions and withdrawals |
| Interest payout | The 1st of the month after the maturity date |
| After maturity | Renewed automatically |
| Fees | None |
You can add as little as 1 point. However, interest is only paid if you add 100 points or more within the same month. I think this is a condition that is easy to overlook.
Limited-time points cannot be deposited. Regular points exchanged from partner services were also excluded. What you can deposit are the regular points you earn through everyday shopping and the like.
How much is the annual rate?
This is a part where I want to be upfront. As of October 2, I could not confirm a figure for the standard annual rate on the official page.
What I could confirm was the campaign figure. In the September 2026 “enter and boost your annual rate” campaign, the rate was 2.0% a year for points added in September.
Third-party articles put the standard annual rate at 0.5%. But I was not able to confirm that as an official statement. I think the surest approach is to check the rate on the app screen before you deposit.
The annual rate for Rakuten Point Interest is 0.108%. That one was stated clearly on the official page. As a simple calculation, depositing 10,000 points for a year earns about 10 points. It may feel less like growing your points and more like changing where you keep them.
Maturity and when the interest arrives
Interest on the fixed-term service does not arrive every month. It is paid in a lump sum into your Point Fixed Term account on the 1st of the month after the maturity date.
The September campaign page gives a good sense of the timing. For points added in September 2026, the maturity date was September 30, 2028. The interest would be paid around October 1, 2028.
In other words, the cutoff was the end of the month two years after the month you added the points. Whether you add them at the start of the month or at the end, the maturity date appears to be the same.
After maturity, the term is renewed automatically. At that point, the balance including the interest you received apparently becomes the next principal. It is set up to keep going even if you leave it alone.
What happens if you withdraw early
Even before maturity, you can withdraw all of your deposited points at any time. I find that reassuring.
However, if you withdraw before the maturity date, no interest is paid. Your original points simply come back as they were. They do not shrink, but they do not grow either.
- If you withdraw before maturity, the interest on that fixed term becomes zero
- A boosted campaign rate also stops applying if you withdraw early
- Points you plan to use within the 2 years are safer left out of the fixed term
So it seems best to put in only the amount you can say for certain you will not use for 2 years. Points you are unsure about can sit on the interest side, where you can move them in and out freely. That may be easier on the mind, too.
How to deposit and withdraw
The official introduction page did not go into detailed operating steps. Combining it with the help pages, the flow looks like this.
- Open Rakuten Point Fixed Term in the Rakuten PointClub app or on the web
- Enter the number of points to deposit and add them
- In months with a campaign, complete the entry as well
- Leave the points as they are until maturity
- On the 1st of the month after maturity, the interest lands in your account
To withdraw, you choose the number of points you want to cancel on the fixed-term screen. According to the help page, you then tap “Cancel” on the details screen.
The screen layout can change with app updates, so please follow what you actually see on your screen.
Let me go off on a small tangent here. The only points you can put into these services are the regular points you have already earned. So how many points you earn from your monthly payments is the foundation. Our household has consolidated its phone bills with Rakuten Mobile. I feel that reviewing fixed costs also pays off on the point-earning side.
Clicking this opens the Rakuten login page. Once you log in, you’ll see the campaign details.
How Rakuten Point Interest works
Next is the other service, Rakuten Point Interest. This one is used together with a setting called Tame-Toku mode.
The rate is 0.108% a year. Interest is calculated on your balance at the end of each month and paid into your interest account on the 5th of the following month. Fractions of less than 1 point are apparently carried over to the next month.
Only regular points can be deposited. You can add from 1 point, and there are no fees. The limit per addition and the daily transaction limit were the same figures as for the fixed-term service.
You can withdraw and use your deposited points at any time. The page also states clearly that they never decrease. As an entry point for trying out point-growing services, this may well be the one with the lowest hurdle.
The role of Tame-Toku mode
Tame-Toku mode is a setting in the Rakuten PointClub app. When you turn it on, your regular points are added to the interest side automatically. It is said to be switchable with a single tap.
According to the help page, the automatic additions run from 14:00 each day. While the mode is on, limited-time points are apparently used first when you shop. It is a way of making regular points easier to keep.
There is a point to watch, however. It concerns cases where you use points toward payments such as your Rakuten Mobile bill. The help page said you need to either withdraw the amount you need or pause the automatic additions temporarily.
After a withdrawal, the automatic additions appeared to stop for 3 days. For the finer details, I think it is safest to read the guidance in the app.
The August 2026 “double interest” campaign has ended
What prompted me to write this article in the first place was the August campaign. When I opened the Rakuten PointClub app, there was a promotion that doubled the interest.
That August round ended on August 31, 2026. The official page now shows it as outside the campaign period. I am keeping the conditions from that time here as a record.
| Item | Conditions in August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Eligible service | Rakuten Point Interest |
| Period | August 4, 10:00 to August 31, 23:59 |
| Entry | Required |
| Offer | Double interest on the points added in August |
| Basis of calculation | The difference between the balances on July 31 and August 31 |
| Other conditions | Tame-Toku mode turned on as of August 31 |
| Example of disqualification | Withdrawing points after entering |
| Cap | 10,000 points |
| Payout | Paid as limited-time points around the end of September |
| Expiry of the reward | October 31, 23:59 |
“Double” did not mean that the interest on everything you had deposited would double. Only the amount you added in August was covered. I think this was an easy point to misunderstand.
The page also stated that Rakuten Group employees were not eligible. I am not eligible either, so here I have limited myself to explaining how it worked.
Campaigns I could confirm from September onward
Promotions of the same type seem to continue month after month in different forms. Here are the ones I could confirm for September.
| Month | Service | Offer | Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | Interest | Double interest on points added in August | 10,000 points |
| September 2026 | Interest | 10x, 5x or 3x interest by lottery | 10,000 points |
| September 2026 | Fixed Term | 2.0% annual rate with entry and an addition | Not stated officially |
The September campaign for the interest service was a lottery. It ran from September 3 to September 30. First prize was 10x interest for 1,000 people. Second prize was 5x for 10,000 people, and third prize was 3x for 100,000 people.
For the September fixed-term campaign, entry was open from September 8 to September 30. Interest at 2.0% a year is paid if you keep the points deposited until maturity.
As of October 2, I could not find a campaign page for October. The official introduction page was still showing the September notice. Please check the app to see whether a new promotion has come out.
In terms of the campaign types I sorted out earlier, all of these are limited-time bonuses on top of the base rate. Only the multiplier and the period change. Once you know the pattern, I think each new month’s promotion becomes easier to read.
Who it suits and who it does not
Whether the fixed-term or the interest service fits you better depends, I think, on how you use your points.
People Rakuten Point Fixed Term may suit
- You have built up regular points and have no plans to use them for 2 years
- Receiving everything at maturity suits you better than interest arriving every month
- You want to avoid services whose value fluctuates
People Rakuten Point Interest may suit better
- You often use points toward payments
- You have not decided when you will use them
- You want to start small and see how it works first
People neither may suit
- Almost all the points you earn are limited-time points
- You tend to use up your points right away
If you would like to compare these with services whose value fluctuates as well, my comparison of Rakuten Point Interest, Rakuten Point Investment and R-stock may be a useful reference.
Common mistakes and pitfalls
Based on the official conditions, here are the places where people are likely to trip up.
- Assuming the fixed-term and interest services are the same thing
- Adding fewer than 100 points to the fixed term and earning no interest
- Thinking limited-time points can be deposited too
- Forgetting to enter the campaign
- Depositing points you had planned to use for payments
The one I expect to be most common is forgetting to enter. In both August and September, entry was a required condition. Simply adding points does not make you eligible.
The other is the balance with your payments. If you use points toward things like your mobile phone bill, it seems wise to decide first how much to keep aside.
What to check before you start
- Are the points you want to deposit regular points? (Limited-time points are not eligible)
- Can you manage without the fixed-term points for 2 years?
- Can you add 100 points or more to the fixed term within the same month?
- Does this month’s campaign require an entry?
- Have you kept aside the points you use for payments?
- Have you checked the current annual rate on the app screen?
Frequently asked questions
Q. Are Rakuten Point Fixed Term and Rakuten Point Interest the same thing?
They are separate services. With the fixed term, you deposit for 2 years and receive interest at maturity. The interest service has no set period, and interest arrives on the 5th of every month.
Q. What is the annual rate for Rakuten Point Fixed Term?
In the September 2026 campaign, it was 2.0% a year with entry and an addition. I was not able to confirm the standard figure on the official page this time. Please check the app screen before you deposit.
Q. Do my points decrease if I withdraw early?
No, they do not. You can withdraw the full amount at any time. However, if you withdraw before the maturity date, no interest is paid.
Q. Can I deposit limited-time points?
No. For both the fixed-term and interest services, only regular points are eligible. Regular points exchanged from partner services are also said to be excluded.
Q. How many points do I need to get started?
Both let you add from 1 point. However, the fixed term only pays interest if you add 100 points or more within the same month. The basic limit was 30,000 points per addition.
Q. What happens at maturity?
On the 1st of the month after maturity, interest is paid into your Point Fixed Term account. After that, the term is renewed automatically. The balance including the interest apparently becomes the next principal.
Q. Can I still join the August double interest campaign?
No. It ended on August 31, 2026. In September it had changed to a lottery-style promotion. Please check the app or the official page for this month’s details.
Q. Can I receive the interest in cash?
No. Interest is paid as points. The help page said it cannot be received in cash or converted to cash.

Summary
Rakuten Point Fixed Term turned out to be a service where you deposit regular points for 2 years and receive interest at maturity. It is a different thing from Rakuten Point Interest. You can withdraw early, but then no interest is paid.
The August double interest campaign has ended. Even so, promotions of the same type seem to appear every month. It seems worth checking just two things each time: whether entry is required, and which service is covered.
The points you deposit build up from your everyday payments. In our household, we have consolidated our phone bills with Rakuten Mobile. Alongside growing your points, why not take a look at the fixed costs on the earning side as well?
